A national campaign is hoping to make Yom Kippur, or September 18th, “No-Device Day” for not just Jews but all Americans. Two NY advertising gurus are urging people to use this day as a time to take a break from technology and reconnect with family and friends on a face-to-face basis. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, marks the final day of a 10-day period of introspection beginning with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana. Although observant Jews refrain from using electricity or cars, many Jews are on their cell phones or other electronic devices even during religious ceremonies. Rabbis see the increased use of gadgets during the holidays as a distraction from the focus on one’s relationship with God and with fellow human beings. Campaign creator Eric Yaverbaum said, “When it comes to overuse, misuse and abuse of our devices, most of us have some atoning to do. What better time than the Jewish holidays for all of us to follow the example of contemplation and reconnecting with the important things.” More than 10000 people have signed the campaign, which includes an ad with a photo of Tiger Woods and the phrase: “You don’t have to be Jewish to atone for your texts on Yom Kippur.” Other ads feature Lindsay Lohan and Mel Gibson.
