Community-driven navigation app Waze goes social with the addition of social apps like Yelp and Foursquare

Waze, the traffic app which combines the knowledge of its 12 million users in order to tackle delays, has an all-new iteration which brings listings and reviews from Foursquare and Yelp.

The free app brings a navigation experience fueled by live updates from the user-base who both actively register delays, police traps and accidents and passively contribute to the traffic data pool. The idea is to outsmart the traditional GPS app with actual reports from users.

Waze 3.0 for Android has been completely redesigned from top to bottom with an all new interface which aims to make use of the larger screen real estate on some Android phones. There’s also speech-to-text functionality for the ultimate hands-free experience.

The headline new feature however is the integration of social apps like Yelp and Foursquare to give those pit-stops a little more pep.

“Traditional GPS systems are built on static, old world maps and points of interest, which never reflect real-time information about new businesses, pop-up shops, or live local events,” said the company in a press release.

“The new social eco-system provides a combination of consumer-generated data from people driving, checking in, and reviewing locations in real-time. This layer of social location information is now available to drivers in a navigation setting.

“With community-curated data from Waze, Foursquare, and Yelp, drivers can now search for real-time events as easily as they would find their local Walmart.”

Some of the new features are initially for US and Canadian drivers, but will soon be integrated into the UK version of the app.

Motion 5.0.2 adds minor features, bugfixes

Parallels new Final Cut Pro upgrade

Complementing the release of Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3, Apple has also released Motion 5.0.2. Motion is used to produce titles, transitions, animations, and other effects for Final Cut. The v5.0.2 update is said to improve “overall stability and performance,” including the speed of text editing.

Apple has also made some small feature upgrades. Animation keyframes can now be added automatically when recording is disabled, and a keyboard shortcut has been added for repositioning animation curves and paths. Pan and scale can be tweaked for images in a drop zone; finally, the Keyframe editor has been given a new look meant to ease both viewing and editing.

Motion is a $ 50 download. Users must be running OS X 10.6.8 or later.

Broadband speeds: Are you getting what you pay for?

xl thinkbroadband Broadband speeds: Are you getting what you pay for?

Following yesterday’s news that the ASA is investigating Virgin Media, we want to know if you think you are being sold short by ISPs

Yesterday T3 broke the news that Virgin Media is being investigated by the Advertising Standards Authority, in relation to its claimed broadband speeds.

While tech giants like Microsoft and Apple are nudging customers further into the cloud with every new product, and online based media firms like Netflix and Spotify get ever more popular, the quality of internet connections has never been more important to tech enthusiasts.

However yesterday’s news, and the response we received from readers, shows there is still controversy over the speeds Internet Service Providers advertise, and what they are actually delivering you.

We want to hear about your broadband experiences. Do you think you have been misled on the speeds you are being delivered? What ISP gives the best service? Do you suspect your service has been throttled in the past?

You can check exactly what speed you are getting here http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest/.

We will publish a selection of the best responses, so let us know what you think via Twitter, Facebook, or via our comments section below.

Samsung loses appeal to overturn Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban

Updated 11:03 31 Jan 2012 by Luke Johnson

In the latest twist to a longstanding legal dispute with Apple Samsung has failed to have a ban overturned preventing the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1

Samsung has been dealt another blow in its continuing legal dealings with Apple as a German court finds in favour of the iPad maker as Samsung looks to overturn a ban preventing the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 within the country.

The ruling, from a higher regional court in Dusseldorf has found in favour of Apple as Samsung looked to have a longstanding ban of its flagship 10-inch Android tablet in the country after the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was found to infringe on a number of Apple patents and intellectual property rights.

“Today’s ruling validates Apple’s decision to bring claims against the Galaxy Tab 10.1,” said Florian Muller of FOSSpatents. “Apple’s actions may have been aggressive, but they weren’t unreasonably overreaching. At the very least, there can be a genuine dispute over this issue.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N

Following the sales ban last year Samsung issued a revised edition of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the 10.1 landing with a revised bezel design that features more prominently on the front of the design.

Officially unveiled at MWC last year the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was given a dramatic redesign prior to launch following the official unveiling of the iPad 2 with Samsung scrapping the device’s 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera in favour of a lower res snapper and a considerably thinner form factor.

Which device would you rather add to your tech arsenal the Apple iPad 2 or the Samsung Galaxy S II? Let us know via the comments box below.
